Three arrested in drugs raids - Wigan

Operation DelmasPolice have arrested two (see update) three people in raids across Wigan as part of an operation to crack a major drug dealing gang. 

Warrants were executed at five addresses in Golborne and Platt Bridge as part of Operation Delmas. 

Led by the North West Regional Crime Unit, the raids were supported by armed officers from GMP's Wigan division. 

The operation is aimed at disrupting a major drug conspiracy that has seen large quantities of cocaine travelling north from London to be sold on the streets of Wigan and the wider North West.

Appeal to trace missing Wigan man

Stanley HinesPolice are appealing for the public's help to trace a Wigan man. 

Stanley Hines, also known as Stanley Hinds, had been staying with a travelling community at Phoenix Way in recent weeks. 

At about 10pm on 14 August 2010, he went to get some cigarettes and has not been seen or heard from since. 

The travelling community have since left the area and have had no contact with him.

Don't give car thieves an easy ride!

Car TheftPolice in Wigan are urging local residents to keep their vehicles secure at all times. 

Residents are reminded to make sure windows are locked and all valuables are out of sight, this includes iPods, hangbags, laptops, mobile phone chargers, sat navs and their mounting cradle. 

Wendy O’Neil Crime Reduction Advisor said: “We urge people not to leave anything of value displayed in their vehicles. Even a coat or bag might tempt a thief to break in. Lock your possessions in the boot or better still remove them completely from the vehicle. It only takes a few seconds to remove your valuables. Don’t make it easy for criminals. “

Men steal large quantity of Euros - Leigh

Men who claimed to be plain clothes police officers stole a large amount of Euros from a house in Leigh. 

Around 8.30pm on Monday 2 August 2010, two men knocked on the door of a house on The Avenue, Leigh. 

When the door was answered one of the men stated they were from 'Manchester Police CID', but did not show any ID.   

They were allowed into the house and one of the men took everyone in the house into the living room, while the second man went upstairs.

Man, 58, injured following collision

A man is in a serious condition in hospital after a collision with a taxi in a Leigh car park. 

Shortly before 4am on Sunday 8 August 2010, police were called to a car park near King Street, following reports of a collision. 

Officers attended and found a 58-year-old man had been in collision with a private hire Vauxhall Zafira.

Connor gets his message on a postcard!

Connor's Winning PostcardLocal children have expressed their artistic talent in a competition to design a crime and burglary awareness postcard for Greater Manchester Police and Wigan Council. 


Youngsters in years 5-6 from St Georges Church of England Primary School, Meadow Bank Primary School and New Greenhall Primary School, Atherton, all had a go at creating images and slogans that would catch the eye of local residents. 

Talented winner Connor Greenhalgh (of year 5 New Greenhall Primary School) designed a postcard reminding people to keep their personal possessions safe and his message focused on the theft of laptops.

Atherton pupils get clued up on home security

School pupils from Atherton were advised about how to keep their homes and belongings safe. 

PCSOs visited year 6 classes in St Georges Church of England Primary School and in Meadow Bank Primary School, to help pupils avoid becoming victims of crime and become a Junior Crime Fighter. 

Youngsters were asked to take home and fill in a short survey with questions about how security conscious they are in the home when it comes to locking doors and windows and what steps to take when going on holiday. 
Completed surveys were all entered into a prize draw to win an MP3 player. Pupils were also given a UV security-marking pen to mark personal property and they were each presented with a certificate for taking part.

Man tried to snatch schoolboys - Golborne

Police in Wigan are hunting a man who tried to abduct two schoolboys. 

Between midday and 12.45pm on Monday 19 July 2010, the victims, aged nine and 10, were going to a chip shop when they noticed a white van parked on Springfield Gardens, Golborne. 

The van then passed them slowly, before reversing up a drive and making a U-turn, heading back towards the boys. 

A passenger shouted for the boys to come and look at something and the boys stepped closer. 

The man then grabbed the older boy and tried to grab his friend.

Anti-Cuts Group Call for Town Centre Rally

Steve HallThe newly formed 'People Against Cuts' group, which aims to forge a non-partisan alliance of local trades unionists and public service users across the borough, has called for a Wigan Town centre rally on Saturday 31st July (1.00pm start) to protest against the huge public spending cuts likely in Wigan Borough area over the next two years and beyond.

They are appealing to everyone potentially affected, and who are opposed to the unprecedented cuts being imposed by the new Conservative-Lib-Dem coalition on local authorities and Government departments, to join them in their proposed 'open microphone' event at the junction of Wallgate/Market Street (opp. The Moon Under Water pub).
Speaking on behalf of the group, which includes leading members of UNITE the Union and PCS unions, members of UNISON and community activists from across the borough, Leigh UNITE Branch President, Stephen Hall said:
