Matt Howarth - Straight from the heart.

MattIsn’t getting up in the early hours exhausting? The excruciating creek of bones as you rise from your slumber, the addictive urges of some of the finest tinned Nescafe, the effort of strolling from your bedroom to the bathroom, the making of the bed (crying as you straighten each corner of the duvet as if you are doing some form of community service) the making of the breakfast and even the communicating to your other half, with half hearted answers and grunting responses. What a grueling task. No wonder us Brits think the snooze button is one of the most ingenius ideas. I am currently learning how to get the most of my days, as at the moment, at least for me, there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in a day to fill my every desire, dream and ambition. Always something to do. If we didn’t have to incorporate eating into our lives I’m sure we would all have an extra 2 hours or so. Never have we spent so much time, chopping, peeling, prepping and munching.

Our seconds and moments are filled with nibbling and chomping. We then all have our little rituals and necessary actions we must do each day, for me, perfecting the hair style with my many creams, gums, lotions and potions which are taking up my entire bedroom table space. How many hours do we actually all work when we take away the time spent grooming ourselves, eating, and in-fact sleeping? Maybe we should all somewhat be more stricter with ourselves and have no life enjoyment whatsoever. Either way I am attempting my very hardest to getting the most from my days, however still if I get up at 5am in a morning I’m finding that I’m not getting everything done! Solutions? Maybe I could stop getting wrapped up in Homes under the hammer in a morning for one!

How saddened I am to see another business in Atherton go under. Amethyst Arts Crafts & Gifts of Market Street now has a closing down sale and even the fixtures and fittings of the store have to be sold by next Saturday. Sharing the news with Atherton Online on Facebook, owner Michelle said:

“Another shop to be stood empty on Market Street the council has a lot to answer for.If they want to keep this town going they need to review the rates, parking, public toilets, etc etc, who is allowed A-Boards out and who is allowed to put all their goods at the front of their shop and the empty premises next door? its one rule for one here and another rule for everyone else. Thank you to everyone for your support over the years i will really miss you all x”

What a sorry state of affairs our town centre is. Should you get peckish whilst you are strolling up and down Market Street why not have a takeaway pizza? Another few strides... why not treat yourself to some traditional Fish and Chips? After you have eaten that, stroll a little more and obtain some Southern fried chicken presented to you in a red and white striped cardboard box. That of course doesn’t even cover the cafes, sandwich bars and coffee shops. Atherton’s unsightly amount of food and drink stop outs is now quite frankly becoming obscene. Why don’t we just get a McDonald's and have done with it? Failing that. maybe we could get some traditional, classical and respected family run businesses? Oh, but of course we did have. Now Michelle Dunne is out of business owing to the sheer fact that our council are a complete waste of space in every way, shape and form possible and the facilities are somewhat lacking in terms of pretty much anything at all. We don’t need our town to be polished around the edges, we don’t need it to be given a bodged job... quite honestly it needs a major overhaul and some money spending on it, rather than that of Wigan town centre. It’s an absolute shambles. All of the little nic nac shops are disappearing before our very eyes and at this rate we shall simply be left with chippy’s, pizza places, banks and maybe the post office! The same can be said I’m sure for many other places around the UK, however if the council don’t intend doing anything other than installing a new littler bin... who am I to suggest they should pull their finger out?

I wish Michelle the very best of luck for the future.

Well Atherton town centre doesn’t look to be getting a revamp or an overhaul anytime soon, but one part of our town certainly is... us! Atherton Online is currently preparing to launch a brand new look site from the beginning of March. We want to know what more you would like to see from your own towns local site.
Do you want more opinion pages? More wider news coverage? What about a historical section of our historic town?

You must let us know, the site is being given a more “professional image” so please do make sure you spread the word about the website and relaunch.
Contact us via email: hello@athertononline.co.uk or message me directly at matt.howarth@athertononline.co.uk There hopefully shall be some new writers joining the team as well as a new visual look, so please do keep checking for more updates throughout February.

I shall still be bringing you my column as part of the relaunch and I thank you for all the support so far since my joining way back in July 2011. Be sure to join me over the coming weeks leading to the relaunch. Straight from the heart.
