If you have ever had a family member or even your parents suffering from the terrible condition of Dementia, you don't need me to tell you just how upsetting, emotional and hard it is to deal with.
The support with the condition is lacking, people's knowledge needs improving and no facilities are seemingly available to help. Things could be about to change though with a new in-genius idea which is being brought in by Bristol Royal Infirmary, with what they are branding to be as "pop up rooms"
Rooms with 1950's styles (as pictured below) are being created in order to comfort sufferers from memory loss and confusion.
The golden oldie-style rooms feature wallpaper, a radio, furniture and even newspapers from days gone by as often, patients' memories from decades back can be more vivid than recent experiences.
Songs are to be played over iPods and staff nearby, the patients will be encouraged to talk about what they remember.
Other rooms from the 1940's and 1960's are also in process of being created.
So that patients do not become disorientated, Clocks and calendars will also go up in ward areas. Additional training for dementia suffers is also underway.
The fabulous idea is being funded from the likes of local charity shops and cafes within specific areas.
What a fantastic idea in trying to help the delicate people who are unfortunate enough to suffer the condition. It shall be making the best out of a bad situation and making them as comfortable as possible. What could be better? It is nice to see such positive things being done for those who need help the most.
Should you ever use these facilities, I think a lovely trip down memory lane shall be moments to be cherished and to love forever.
Well done to all involved.
