How disgusted I am with the BBC for axing their flagship morning entertainment magazine show Something for the weekend. It apparently is most people's "hangover cure" it's not difficult to watch, it's entertaining, not too serious and quite frankly has something which lacks in many other shows of its sort. The BBC announced last week the show shall broadcast for the final time in March owing to budget cuts with BBC 2 and shall apparently be replaced by a series of repeats.
Presented by Tim Lovejoy, Simon Rimmer and more recently Louise Redknapp the show has a strong and loyal fan base giving the show solid ratings week in, week out. Owing to the impressive ratings people have been astonished by the BBC'S decision.
A Facebook group has been setup in protest to save the show and has already had far more than 20'000 people join, along with nearly 3000 people complaining to the BBC and insisting they agree to reinstate the popular format.
Should the BBC not renew, ITV have expressed interest and confirming that the current on-screen presenters would remain the same, however the shows name would be changed.
I cannot understand how the BBC works at all. We pay licence fees, however come up with remarkably unpopular methods and programme cancellations in order to try and save cash. Yes, cash has to be saved, however to axe a popular show such as this just doesn't sit right. The same goes for their bright idea of proposing to close most of the BBC regional radio stations.
The show isn't the most professional, it isn't the best polished and yes the presenting could be improved... but in this shows instance it is what makes the show! No other programme gets celebrity guests involved in such ways and quite frankly is an asset to the schedules.
The bid to save the show has received major celebrity backing so far and only time shall tell as to whether or not the BBC actually listens to those who pays for their service and show budgets.
Something for the Weekend is set to air for the final time in March.
