I was introduced to Atherton’s very own Chowbent Chapel as a child by my late Grandmother who encouraged my attendance every Sunday. I soon became part of the Sunday School and part of the Chapel’s close-knit congregation. I spent many of my years with the Chapel and even though now I am not a weekly attendee, still to this day the Chapel is part of myself and my mother’s life. To go to such a place which offers such friendship and filled with such kind hearted souls in this day and age is something of quite a rarity.
In the Chapel’s community hall facility (towards the rear of the chapel itself) an annual Christmas fair is held. Brick-a-brack, tombola’s, competitions, a food stall and even a delightful cafe with home made delights is what makes the yearly fair what it is. Packed to the rafters and a real buzz about the place. I consider the fair to be one of my essential things to do on a yearly basis. All proceeds go to the chapel and quite a few bargains to be had! Owing to my attendance I am now in a firm Christmas state of mind and even filled with Christmas spirit and it’s only November! I would like to thank Minister Brenda Catherall for all her efforts (which don’t go unnoticed!) and everyone else who assisted and were involved in making 2011’s efforts as good as it has ever been. An essential part of Atherton’s history continues to live on.
