I cannot help thinking that those suited bigwigs at the British Broadcasting Cooperation are regretting their part multi million pounds relocating deal from London to Salford quays. It may just be one of the biggest and exciting opportunities the North has seen in such a long time, yet for the BBC I can’t help thinking it is their worst historic decision on record? The sporting and children’s departments have moved, Blue Peter now has its historic garden shoved onto the roof of Media City and early next year BBC’S signature programme “Breakfast” is due to relocate to the new Northern build. Presenter Sian Williams has refused to participate due to family and already there seems to be a bad smell hanging around BBC HQ over the decision. The move has been criticised by many and there is a worry that many celebrities shall not appear on the shows owing to the travel which would need to be made into Salford.
Already there is worry, already there is regrets and quite frankly to me it seems a disaster. For people like me of course it is a tremendous opportunity and even the fact that a high proportion of BBC’S already existing staff won’t want to make the move means more jobs for the North who is currently suffering a high percentage of people who is out of work. The BBC brand simply isn’t what it once was and the reality is the central hub is in London, not Salford Quays! To move such big departments to Media City was of course a big risk and already it seems to me, one which hasn’t gone as smoothly as bosses would have liked. The Media City building has already been branded “The Most ugliest ever building” thus already surrounded in negativity. The BBC have already implemented a series of cost cuts across the network with more to come throughout 2012. Local radio is at a risk of ceasing and BBC 2 is set to turn into a channel of nothing but televised repeats of shows gone by. I simply wonder just what the BBC spend Tax Payers licence fees on other than wages and Graham Norton! One things for sure it is certainly not original and quality programming!
