Regent Street Christmas lights switch on... leaves bitter disappointment!

It was 1949 when Regent Street was first turned into a Christmas wonderland by the help of some high energy light bulbs! For more than 60 years shoppers have had the delight of numerous festive displays to turn any scrooges into pure Christmas enthusiasts.
This year, however, it seems there was mass disappointment. No chandeliers, bells or sleighs gliding through the sky, just giant silver stars with the theme being Bill Nighy and Ashley Jensen’s new 3D film Arthur Christmas.

American singer Kelly Clarkson and X Factor winner Matt Cardle couldn’t even create a festive mood. People took to twitter and said:

‘Some famous person turned the Regent St lights on. Wasting energy if you ask me!!’

Another (NicolaGaskell) tweeted: ‘7 weeks of Arthur Christmas lights on Regent St, how long can the novelty last?’

One place I know which shall not be a let down is that of the Trafford Centre!!! Every year they seem to go all out and turn the already immaculate artistic building into a winter wonderland, of course there seems to be a few who moan about Electricity costs... but so what! Get into the spirit of things, the Regent Street lights however look completely dismal and a simple excuse for advertising space and in the process making the historic lights lose all genuinity. It seems only to be exclusive areas or places such as the Trafford Centre which tend to bother with Christmas lights these days. When I was little I used to love my Grandma taking me into Bolton every Christmas and seeing an extremely large Elephant in the shopping arcade along with Santa's grotto in Debenhams! These days not even Bolton can be bothered with the festivities.
Atherton, I’m afraid to say falls flat year upon year. I’m sure Wigan won’t let their shiny new shopping centre survive without a Santa or 2 either! What does Atherton get? A few naff stars and dreary old trees. If I have to see those ghastly trees drooping over Joan Weir Fabrics on Church Street for another year running, I shall go raving mad! Is it too much to ask for a reindeer or two?
