How do you sleep at night? are you one of those that night after night you have no problem nodding off straight away were the thought of wriggling around and tossing and turning sounds far to exhausting when you just want some simple shuteye? Or are you one of those that needs to follow the traditional and tedious routine of counting sheep before you enter the land of nod? If you’re the latter or have general sleeping problems then a new study has shown that Cherry Juice is the key to a longer and deeper sleep. This possibly because it contains melatonin, the hormone which regulates sleep.Volunteers drank either 30ml of Montmorency cherry juice concentrate or a placebo sample twice a day for seven days.
Tests showed that even after just a week, melatonin in the cherry juice drinkers was 15-16 per cent higher than in the placebo group. And on average these participants slept for 25 minutes longer, with a 5-6 per cent increase in their “sleep quality”.
The drinkers also stated that after drinking the juice on the scheme their sleeping routines were far more strict and they didn’t nap during the daytime or feel the need to.
Dr Glyn Howatson, who led the study at Northumbria University, said: “This shows tart cherry juice can be used to facilitate sleep in healthy adults.
“And, excitingly, it has the potential to be applied as a natural intervention for insomnia and general disturbed sleep from shift work or jet lag.”
There are so many different studies out there which claim that they have found the perfect remedy or method which shall enable us to get a good night’s sleep without the need of hours upon hours of broken sleep. That many in-fact you don’t know what to believe and therefore feel dubious about any form of research. I’m not one to take much notice of these “claims”, yet when a similar study showed that grape juice makes people feel more healthy and energetic... I gave it a try and indeed it did and it truly worked! I’m one of those that struggles to get to sleep but when I’m out you will have trouble wakening me! Unfortunately I cannot abide cherries so I won’t be testing this method... though surely anything which could possibly enhance and improve your sleep is worth a go? for me however, I shall continue to strive in attempting to get my bedroom entirely blacked out, yet with numerous electronic items flashing every so often it is still proving a problem!
