Matt Howarth, This Week

Matt HowarthI have had a rather insightful week it has to be said. Last Thursday I was lucky enough to have my first experience within the media sector as I had, I’m sure my long awaited radio debut. Of course I was a natural and ruled the airwaves with my unique, engaging and addictive personality. Then again of course if I was to be so self indulgent I would surely regret it in my future years as a wannabe media mogul! I always believe it is always extremely important to identify strengths and weaknesses in new found experiences and my radio debut certainly does not differentiate from my beliefs! What could I have done better? Well, I felt a little backwards in coming forwards as it were... the whole ambiance and casual surroundings was certainly not what I was expecting, yet was ever so charming and much less commercial than I originally thought.

A big organisation such as the British Broadcasting Cooperation can run one of its biggest radio stations 5 Live in a small room with an oval table and 3 laptops, how surprised yet engaged in the proceedings I was. Possibly my reaction to the setup of the station was the reasoning behind my slight unintended quietness. For all that somehow didn’t listen to my appearance, I was discussing ITV’S Costume drama Downton Abbey of which returned this week on ITV 1 and just whether or not the show is over hyped. I for one am an avid fan of the show, whilst the woman also involved in the show wasn’t a fan and thought the show was a true example of snobbery and class divide. My points for and her points against. All be it I cannot remember a single word of what I said on the night, the feedback I got was extremely positive including a major thumbs up and congratulations by presenter Tony Livesey. I am happy with what I managed to get across and put up a decent argument... though quite frankly the ghastly woman who was wittering on about class divide was entirely deluded. Who on earth sits in the comfort of their living rooms in the evenings with a Horlicks in one hand, the remote control in the other whilst also analysing minuscule details of Television programmes? the reality is, you either love or hate a programme... a fine example is Big Brother, either one person’s example of viewing, pleasurable delight or anothers idea of visual hell, either way you do not start to think about the target demographic audience and whether or not the show is aimed at a more sophisticated and well educated audience. I enjoyed the discussion very much and with fingers and toes crossed along with a few other body organs, I am hoping to get some more broadcasting opportunities... of course if I do I shall keep you all updated. I do hope so though as of course second time round I know what to expect in every way shape and form and as a result, shall hopefully be my usual, unfiltered self without the need of holding back! though I may stick to using my broadcasting voice!

I seem to mention this on a weekly basis, but I shall do so again! I have once again managed to discover why the Internet is indeed the best thing since sliced bread... Internet shopping! I have managed to get myself a complete new outfit and set of attire, all of which designer labels and NEW for exceptionally low prices! Coats, jeans, jumper & boots all desirable names (of which are Genuine!!!) and none of them put too much pressure on the virtual wallet! we may all be having to watch our spending, though if you are an ebay expert (as indeed I like to consider myself) then you can be left feeling rather smug with your winnings when they arrive through the postal service! I’m hoping to be looked up and down a few times when I step out in my new kit later this week... nothing like wearing a new set of clothes for the first time is there?

How upset I was this week when I was driven past the Hesketh Fletcher High School building. Memories of yesteryear came flooding back, the thoughts of when I was once a naive school boy with his black shoes and messenger bag. I was shocked to see the building looking so derelict and abandoned, it seemed to me it was craving out to be loved and to be reinstated to how it once stood in pride in years gone by. All be it towards its latter life the school had its fair share of negative press and bad news, through no fault of its own of course! but it was an important symbol of Atherton, a symbol which is now a thing of the past and the closure of the once loved school has to be one of the worst things to happen to Atherton in its towns history. Abandoned by those who once loved it, negative opinion about those in it and simply forgotten by its council and financial backers. The reputation of the school may have been in the black in its last year of existence but quite frankly realisation seems to have already kicked in that we no longer have it! We have a few councillors to complain to for taking away our local place of education, a complete disaster! the pathetic idea of moving the town’s local library and a 16-19 year olds learning centre in the school’s building really seems like a slap in the face to us all, however like me do not forget the memories you once had there... I certainly had a fair ratio of good and bad, but something of which I wouldn’t change. I shall take my memories there through the rest of my life and one final thanks to all those that were with me through my initial journey of Independence.

This Week, I discuss as to why Atherton's new local Asda Supermarket is gathering a stack of complaints against its name for its shoddy customer serivce, staff manner and staff members forcing customers to use the self checkout facility. Staying on the topic of Supermarkets, I also reveal why Tesco has been given the key to UK Domination. BBC Radio 2 presenter and Television personality Chris Evans has this week declared he is to give up drinking, I reveal my thoughts and why my head is held up high. Britain is set for an early winter this year with SNOW expected to hit as early October, is that prospect filling you with dread or excitement? & Red Rum trainer Ginger McCain dies aged 80.
