Cadbury’s prune their roses... now 11 less sweets in every tin!

Box of Cadbury's RosesPicture the scene... it’s Christmas day, your entire family are at your house cluttering it with wrapping paper and empty battery packets. In the centre of your lounge you have your coffee table & what is the best Christmas decoration of them all? The Chocolate Roses tin of course!
Christmas just isn’t Christmas or a “I’m sorry” present just aren’t the same unless they come in the shape and form of a blue and red box or tin. Every year it is simply the norm for us to help ourselves to one of the chocolate delights hidden behind one of the coloured wrappings. Whether it would be a solid or cream filling it seems Cadbury’s traditional Roses chocolates are those which everybody just can’t get enough of.

It seems though that this year the Roses won’t stretch quite as far when sharing with your loved ones because Cadbury’s have ditched 11 of the precious sweets due to rising cocoa costs. in 2009 cocoa was £900 a ton and now it has crept up to being over £2000. Cadbury’s which is now no longer a traditional British brand, as it was taken over by Kraft foods in 2010 for a sum of £11.5bn shall introduce the 11 sweet less tins for the SAME amount of £5 for a tin in Tesco’s however it is expected that in most retailers they shall be more expensive than they were last year with 11 + sweets in them. In terms of size up to now Roses tins have weighed 975g but as of Christmas they shall be weighing in at a mere 850g.

The same shall apply to that of the Cadbury’s Heroes tins. This comes not long after Cadbury’s revealed they had cut down Dairy Milk bars by 2 squares yet are still charging the same price.

A spokesman for Cadbury’s said:

‘Like many other companies, we have taken this step because of rising costs including commodities.
‘However, we still believe that our tins represent excellent value for money.’

A tin of Cadbury's RosesI think this is one of those things which cannot be stopped. Prices for materials are going up and of course Cadbury have to make some form of profit. Piling the price up on the other hand, is absolutely ridiculous and since the American takeover leaves me to think that many shall simply avoid the traditional once British brand from now on.
The same can be said for Curly Wurlys (who remembers them?) not only are they rather scarce to find these days but they have also dramatically reduced in size and can no longer last a full day, after a few chomps that’s it! Wagon Wheels... once the size of a Compact Disc, now the size of a measly small Hockey puck. Foods getting smaller and prices rising, something doesn’t seem quite right does it?

I for one though shall still be putting my hands in the Roses this Christmas (& the Celebrations) who can put a price on a round or oblong shape of cream filling or caramel?
