Our most recent ATSA event, the Tyldesley football cup competition, took place on Thursday 18th June at Fred Longworth High School.
Nine Tyldesley and Astley schools took part in the competition (St. George's Central, Hindsford, St. Ambrose Barlow, Sacred Heart, Holy Family, St. Stephen's, St. John's, Tyldesley Primary and Garrett Hall). Most schools played an 'A' and a 'B' team and so there were 14 teams taking part in total.
The teams were split into two groups, with each team playing each other once. The winners from each group would meet in the final.
All matches were closely contested but by the time all the fixtures were complete, Garrett Hall were the winners of their group with St. Ambrose Barlow winning their section to meet them in the final.
No goals during the final match meant that extra time was to be played, however the deadlock could still not be broken and so the match was to be decided on penalties. What happened next was not expected as both teams took excellent penalties and matched each other all the way until a Garrett Hall player hit the crossbar! St. Ambrose Barlow needed to score to win, however they also missed theirs!
The great penalty shoot out continued, however the match was finally settled in the favour of Garrett Hall 11-10.
I would like to thank Mr Barlow (SGC) for organising this event for ATSA. Thanks also to Fred Longworth High School for allowing us to use their facilities and the pupils from the school who did a great job refereeing the matches for us.
The picture above shows the winning Garrett Hall team with their trophy and medals.
