ATSA Staff football match

ATSA Staff football match

Atherton Collieries FC played host to the most recent ATSA event - this was an eleven-a-side football match between ATSA staff and teachers from schools in Leigh, Lowton and Golborne (LLG).

The ATSA team comprised of staff from SGC, St. Philip's, St. John's, Parklee, Atherton St. George's, Meadowbank, Sacred Heart and Garrett Hall and was 'managed' by M Grogan (SGC) with C Howlett (Atherton St. George's) as captain.

The LLG team was led by D Nash (Gilded Hollins) who called upon staff from St. Joseph's, St. Luke's, Golborne Community School and Lowton High amongst others.

The wet conditions meant that the usual slick passing display that these two teams would normally exhibit went out of the window and more of a 'kick and chase' tactic was employed! With ten minutes on the clock, A Hunt (Golborne Community School) brought down M Grogan in the box and a penalty was awarded to ATSA, however, a great save by the LLG goalkeeper kept the scores level.

With no goals at half time, changes were needed as the ATSA team would now be kicking 'up hill' and those changes made an immediate impact as 'live-wire' R Livesley (SGC) followed up a shot to give ATSA the lead. M Grogan then volleyed in a great free kick from A Smith (Atherton St. George's) to double the lead.

Age was catching up with some players going into the final ten minutes and it was the 'youthful' G Williams (St. Philip's) who dribbled his way through half the LLG team before blasting his shot home to complete a 3-0 victory for the ATSA team.

I would like to thank Atherton Collieries for hosting this event, providing the use of changing rooms and club house. Thanks to our referee, David, who did a great job and also to Hindsford FC who provided our kit. A special thanks also to all the spectators who braved the conditions to support this event.

It is hoped that this is the first of many matches between the two sets of teachers. Should any staff members wish to be involved with the ATSA team then they should contact M Grogan (SGC). Anyone wishing to be involved with the LLG team should contact D Nash (Gilded Hollins).

Should any other 'groups'/workplaces wish to be involved with this in the future then please contact M Grogan (or if you have the challenge of another sport, I am sure we could provide a team?!?)

The picture above shows the players from both teams.
