Monday 9th February saw 6 primary schools from Atherton and Tyldesley take part in the first ever ATSA Y5/6 Basketball festival at Fred Longworth High School.
St. George's Central, Parklee, Atherton St. George's, St. Richard's, Sacred Heart, and St. Ambrose Barlow all brought teams of children to take part in the event which was organised by Mr J Whalley from FLHS.
Each school was given an opportunity to play each other once over the course of the event with schools gaining two points for a win. At the end of all of the matches it was to be the top two schools who would meet in the final match to decide the overall winner.
St. Ambrose Barlow were the clear winners of the group and progressed to the final. The battle for 2nd place was to be decided by the difference in baskets scored (for and against) with St. Richard's narrowly missing out to Parklee.
In the final match, Parklee took an early lead and although St. Ambrose Barlow had several chances, they were unable to score and it was the school from Atherton who were the overall winners.
I would like to thank Mr Whalley for organising this event on behalf of ATSA and FLHS for allowing us to use their facilities to host this event. Thanks should also go to students from Fred Longworth High School who supported this event by officiating, timekeeping and scoring. Without all this help, this competition would not have been the success that it was. A mention also to the many supporters who came to event to help create a fantastic atmosphere.
