Sports in schools is an important part of the curriculum. Teaching children to be healthy, team work, the winning and the losing in competitions and even generally how they can remain fit throughout their lives and retain a lifestyle which is good for them.
Mark Grogan, Deputy at Parklee Primary School and lead teacher from the Atherton Primary Sports Association (APSA) is encouraging the above and a lot more with the association which is encouraging sports of all kinds to our younger members of society.
Mark held his first event of the year, a cross country run on Thursday 13th October on the large playing fields on Wardour Street (formerly Hesketh Fletcher field.)
Over 130 children from not just Mark's own school of Park Lee but seven other Primary schools from Atherton took part. Each school had 4 sub teams - Y3/4 girls, Y3/4 boys, Y5/6 girls and Y5/6 boys. The first 4 runners scores in each team were added together with the school with the lowest total being the winner of each sub section - certificates were up for grabs for the winners of each sub team section.
Results for the Y3/4 girls race:
Joint 1st - Parklee/St. Phillips - 35 points
2nd - Meadowbank - 36 points
3rd - Chowbent - 55 points
Results for the Y3/4 boys race:
1st - Parklee - 25 points
2nd - Chowbent - 35 points
3rd - St. Richards - 45 points
Results for the Y5/6 girls race:
1st - Parklee - 18 points
2nd - St. Phillips - 39 points
3rd - Meadowbank - 40 points
Results for the Y5/6 boys race:
1st - St. Michael's - 29 points
2nd - Parklee - 46 points
3rd - St. Phillips - 56 points
The scores gained from each schools 4 sub teams would then finally be added to give an overall school winner. As a result, it was important that each school had at least 4 runners of whom were the best to represent them and not just 1 or 2!
Trophy's and Medals were presented to the school who finished 1st in the event overall.
Overall result were as follows:
1st - Parklee 124 points
2nd - St. Phillips 206 points
3rd - Chowbent - 237 points
Mr Grogan said that all the children involved desevred a pat on the back. Speaking to Atherton online he said:
"Hopefully in taking part in this event we have helped to stimulate future lifestyle habits with regards to the health and fitness of the children and also highlighted the importance of team work, because even though cross country is primarily an individual event, your individual position does have implications for your overall school team."
"I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the volunteers who helped to marshal the event."
The next event to be held is the netball league that will be starting after half term, involving 8 local schools with games being played at Meadowbank and St. Richard's.
