Here's a video posted by The European ATM security team that shows footage from a recovered pin hole camera used by criminals in the UK. You can see the criminals fitting a pin hole camera which is used to gather pin numbers, and then fitting the card reader that'll be used to clone the card.
Anyway, just interesting to see how it's done and a reminder to cover your hand up when entering your pin. I know I never do (did!), but it seems to make a big difference.
The security team recommends you follow the following guidelines when taking money out:
- Protect your PIN by standing close to the ATM and shielding the keypad with your other hand.
- Check to see if anything looks unusual or suspicious about the ATM. Jiggle the card slot. If there appears to be anything stuck onto the card slot or keypad, don’t use it. Don’t try to remove suspicious devices.
- Be cautious if strangers offer to help you at an ATM, even if your card is stuck or you’re having difficulties, and don’t allow anyone to distract you.
Do you cover your hand when entering in your PIN or is it just me who doesn't (didn't!)?
