At a special community event this week families and other local residents from the Atherton community met the new Principal Designate for Atherton Community School.

Trevor Barton MBE, Governor for the new school and chair of the meeting, introduced Elizabeth Haddock, the Principal Designate. During the meeting Elizabeth shared her vision for the school and her commitment to providing high standards of education and focused attention for every child that attends.
Fully immersed in the plans and preparations for the school, Elizabeth, who is now in post, will be meeting with parents, carers, local schools and other community members in the weeks ahead.
‘This is a school that will be created with and for the local community. I am really excited about the opportunity to create something that raises young people’s aspirations and impacts the future of Atherton,’ says Elizabeth.
Chapel St’s Russell Rook also shared some important updates about the preparations for the new school, including the significant announcement about the preferred site for the school Hamilton Street.
With the support of Partnerships for Schools Chapel St are currently in negotiation with the local authority on the approval of these plans. There are also discussions about the potential for the school to be accommodated in Atherton Town Hall, as a temporary site for the first year of operation in the eventuality that this is needed.

Concluding the evening, Trevor Barton also shared his backing and excitement for the school saying, ‘I have been working with Chapel St as part of the Atherton Community School governing board for 12 months to turn a dream into a reality. With a talented new Principal and a preferred site established, it’s time to move from what might be to what will be. This school proves what is possible when local people share a dream and act positively. I’m looking forward to seeing a new school open that involves the whole community,’ says Trevor.
Chapel St – the sponsor for the new school – organised the evening as part of an official consultation process about the school that is running between 17th December 2011 –17th February 2012. Attendees were invited to share their views about the school through a special consultation survey that has been created.
