Atherton Primary Schools Get Together To Support The Olympics

A New Age Kurling festival was held on Friday the 27th January 2012 as part of Atherton Primary Sports Association (APSA) commitment to the Get Set Network of schools supporting The Olympics. The popular target sport of New Age Kurling is a form of the original curling game. It has been adapted so that it can be played indoors on any smooth, flat surface such as a sports hall, rather than on ice. Importantly, the game can be played by both able-bodied and disabled people of all ages.

The event which brought five Atherton primary schools together was held at St. Michaels Primary School and was organised by the PE teacher, Mrs Marjorie Evans. She is known to be somewhat of an 'expert' in the sport. Mrs Marjorie Evans said, "Kurling is an exciting sport, open to all abilities and we hope will now be a regular festival on the APSA competition calendar."

With the reach of victory being very close between all the schools, it was Chowbent Primary School who won the first APSA New Age Kurling festival.

Mark Grogan, Acting Head Teacher at Parklee Community School and Lead teacher for APSA, said: "I would personally like to that Mrs Evans and the staff from St. Michael's who kindly volunteered to host this festival."

Mr Grogan also gave a special mention to the children from St Michael's who were leaders of the festival: These children stayed behind school to help with various elements of the festival on a Friday evening, when they had probably worked hard all week in school, their assistance at the event was a credit to the school.

With the success of the festival, APSA are hoping to have a Key Stage one New Kurling festival in their competitions calendar before the end of the year. There has also been talk of a teachers' festival too.
