A woman was knocked to the ground by a bag-snatcher in Atherton.
At about 2pm on New Year's Eve, a 57-year-old woman was walking along Hesketh Street having been shopping.
The thief then grabbed her handbag and pulled her to the ground, causing her to fall onto the offender's bike.
The woman noticed that the thief had her handbag so grabbed the rear wheel of his bike so he could not escape.
A nearby resident came to help the woman, prompting the offender to drop the bag. He then rode off down an alleyway towards Car Bank Street.
He is described as white, around 18-20 years old, of medium build, and possibly has fair hair and blue eyes. He was wearing shorts, a grey hooded top with the hood up and was riding a grey/silver mountain bike.
Police Constable Linda Howcroft, of the Volume Crime Team, said: "The woman was targeted in broad daylight by this thief, who appeared determined to steal her handbag.
"I am certain he did not expect her to put up a fight, but she is a very brave and tenacious lady and has refused to let him get away with her handbag.
"We now want the public's help to identify this offender before he strikes again"
