Purse bells handed out to shoppers in Leigh

Police, Leigh councillors and the president of Leigh's Rotary Club have been handing out free purse bells at the Spinning Gate shopping centre.

The bells, which are funded by Wigan council and the rotary club, are proving popular with shoppers, and can be fastened to purses or wallets to help stop them being stolen.

Inspector Ian Kennedy said: "At this time of year there can be an increase in purse and wallet thefts with so many people shopping in the town centre. We hope these bells will make people aware when their property is being interfered with, and will deter thieves from dipping into bags."

Councillor Myra Whiteside says: "This ongoing scheme is marvellous, and so popular with shoppers. Both myself and colleagues from the council think that this is a great way to help vulnerable people in our community."

Barrie Coates, president of the Rotarians, added: "We are always keen to support worthwhile projects within the community, and I think this is a really positive step in reducing and deterring crime."
