Armed robbery at Poundstretcher Leigh

Two armed men have robbed a shop in Leigh.

Just after 10am on Friday 24 June 2011, two men walked into Poundstretcher, Parsonage Retail Park, Leigh. One was armed with an axe while his accomplice had a hammer and a knife.

They threatened and attacked staff with the axe before they stole a substantial amount of money. They ran off and escaped in a silver Audi A6. The car was later found abandoned on wasteland near to Phillips Street.

No one was hurt.

Both were white men wearing scarves. The man with the axe was between 6ft and 6ft 2in tall, of medium build, dressed all in black including a hooded top.

The second man was about 5ft 6in tall, of stocky build, with a black scarf across nose and mouth with a motorbike muffler and a dark cap. He was wearing a black and tanned top, possibly hooded. The knife was in his right hand and the hammer was in his left.

Detective Sergeant Peter Carletti from Wigan CID said: "Staff have been left terrified after the robbery and I would urge anyone who was in the area and saw something suspicious to contact us.
"I would also ask those who may have seen the silver Audi car either driving to the retail park or being abandoned to phone police."

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 7226 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
