Heavily pregnant woman robbed in street - Atherton

A robber targeted a heavily-pregnant woman as she walked along a secluded alleyway in Atherton.

At about 11.25pm on Saturday 11 September 2010, the victim, a 20-year-old woman, was walking along a ginnel near to Chaucer Grove and Blake Avenue when her attacker approached her from behind and grabbed her ponytail.

He then put his hand over her mouth to muffle her screams and rummaged through her pockets. He demanded cash and the victim handed over a wallet containing cash, £7.90 in cash and some sweets.

The victim struggled free and ran away. She was not injured but left shaken.

The offender is described as being taller than 5ft 2in, of chunky build and was wearing a black coat with the hood pulled over his head and leather gloves.

Police Constable Kathryn Allen, of the Volume Crime Team, said: "The offender targeted the victim as she walked alone down a secluded ginnel and will almost certainly have noticed that she was heavily pregnant.

"Such incidents are almost unheard of but I understand it will cause concern to local residents.

"I would urge them to help us catch the person responsible and if you have any information that can help me identify the culprit I want to hear from you."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Volume Crime Team on 0161 856 7203, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
