Armed robbers stole cash during a robbery in Atherton.
At about 11.50pm on Tuesday 27 July 2010, two men smashed their way into the Santander bank on Market Place, Atherton, where security staff were filling cash machines.
The pair, who were armed with axes, threatened two men and demanded cash.
At this time a passing police officer drove past the bank and was approached by a third man who was armed with a pickaxe.
The three robbers, who were dressed in dark clothing and wearing balaclavas, then grabbed some cash and got into a silver Ford Mondeo, that was driven off at speed.
The officer followed the getaway car, which was being driven without its lights on, but lost sight of it in the Westleigh Lane area.
It was found abandoned and alight in a wooded area off Tiverton Drive, Hindley Green at 3.30am on Tuesday 28 July 2010.
Detective Inspector Theresa Carter, said: “These men were all armed and used the threat of violence against security staff and police - they are clearly dangerous and determined to steal as much cash as they could.
“Thankfully no one was injured and because the officer was able to interrupt the robbery the vast majority of cash was not stolen.
“I want to hear from anyone with information about those responsible or who saw a silver Ford Mondeo being driven around before or after the robbery or witnessed it being abandoned.”
Witnesses are asked to call Wigan CID on 0161 856 5307, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
