Crime across Wigan fell by 9.4 per cent between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2010 meaning 2340 fewer people were victims of crime compared to 2008-2009 when crime reduced by 8.4 per cent.
Statistics show robberies have reduced by 23.1 per cent, burglaries by 10.9 per cent and violence against the person (assaults) by 12.7 per cent - that’s 533 fewer victims targeted.
Superintendent Stuart Ellison of Greater Manchester Police’s Wigan Divison said: “This is a fantastic result but we must not become complacent as every victim of crime is one too many. We’ll continue to work tirelessly to reduce the number of people who are affected by crime across the borough and catch offenders who are responsible for criminal acts.”
Recent police crackdowns on anti-social behaviour and burglaries have helped to further combat crime. This year, Operation StaySafe in conjunction with Wigan Council’s Youth Offending Team successfully reduced anti-social behaviour occurring in and around Astley Street Park. Operation Escort saw the number of burglary, vehicle crime and anti-social behaviour incidents reduce in Leigh by a quarter.
“Recent results not only reflect excellent policing, but also some effective partnership working,” says David Smith, Executive Director at Wigan Council and co-chair of the Building Stronger Communities Partnership.
"Working with our colleagues across all agencies enables us to take an approach which doesn’t simply deal with the consequences of crime, but tackles some of the root causes. “
A major clampdown on rogue traders has also seen police and trading standards officers visiting building yards and advising Wigan borough residents how they can avoid becoming victims of doorstep crime.
