Anti-social behaviour at a park in Astley has been almost halved thanks to a recent crackdown.
Operation StaySafe, which involved the Atherton Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) and Wigan Council’s Youth Offending Team (YOT), led to 53 fewer incidents round Astley Street Park between 1 April and 23 May 2010 compared to the same period last year, a drop of 48 per cent.
The initiative was run to reduce anti-social behaviour that was disrupting the neighbourhood near the park, and to ensure the safety of young people who had been drinking.
Police and the YOT patrolled the park and surrounding areas on Friday nights, while police also confiscated alcohol and checked licensed premises to ensure it wasn’t being sold illegally.
Young people were also encouraged to get involved in positive activities run by the Nowt 2 Do project such as cycling, dance classes, DJ / MC lessons and skateboarding.
Inspector Liz Sanderson of the Atherton NPT said: “Operation Staysafe was a real success and shows how committed we are to tackling anti-social behaviour. I hope that people who live near Astley Street Park have noticed a real difference, and we will continue to work with the council and other partners to deal firmly with those who disrupt peaceful communities.”

Police across Wigan borough are now delivering the Policing Pledge, giving people a clear minimum standard of service they can expect from their neighbourhood policing teams.
