Keep your possessions safe! Double-lock UPVC doors

BurglarIf your UPVC doors aren't double-locked, they aren't secure – that’s the message from crime reduction advisers at Greater Manchester Police.

There have been several burglaries across the borough recently where offenders have entered through UPVC doors, and police are urging everyone who has these to secure them properly at all times, especially at night and when the house is unoccupied.

This can be done by…

  • shutting the door and lifting the handle
  • locking the door by turning the key
  •  removing the key from the lock and keeping it nearby
Residents are reminded not to leave keys near doors or windows as criminals can use long hooks to steal them. Keys should be kept in a safe place, known to all members of the household, where they can be quickly found in the event of a fire or emergency.

Lisa Mogan, crime reduction adviser for Greater Manchester Police’s Wigan Division, said: “If you don't lift the handle and double-lock a UPVC door with the key, then even if the handle is lifted up on the inside, it's as good as leaving the door wide open.

“If people follow our simple crime prevention advice they can safeguard themselves against becoming a victim of crime, and will also help us to reduce the number of burglaries across the borough.”
