Man brandishes weapon in Atherton shop

An Atherton shopkeeper was startled by a man brandishing a weapon.

At about 5pm on Wednesday 24 March 2010, the offender, carrying either a knife or metal bar, went into Anam News on Yew Tree Avenue.

He demanded cash from the shopkeeper, whose 14-year-old daughter was with him.

The victim pressed the panic alarm and the man fled.

The offender is described as being white, around 20 to 25-years-old, of medium build and around 5ft 8in tall.

He was wearing a beige jacket with green stripes across it. His face was covered.

Detective Constable Andy Partington said: "While nothing was stolen and nobody was hurt, this was still a shocking experience for the victim and his daughter.

"We have carried out a number of inquiries which lead us to believe the man is local. We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or seen the man, to call us.

"Incidents like this are rare in Atherton, and we hope the public can help us in this case."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 5307 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
